Adelmo Fernands, Vasco on portable STP:

South Goa shack operators, left impressed by a demonstration given on a portable STP (sewage treatment plant) by a Chennai-based company, have reportedly urged the government to consider the technology as a possible solution to the problem of wastewater generated by shacks (NT April 30). At present, many beach shack owners use bio-toilets and other ways to deal with kitchen wastewater. It is learnt that the system is a pre-packaged set-up that can be assembled in 24 hours and uses electrochemical technology. A holding tank for kitchen wastewater can be installed and connected to the portable treatment plant. Small scale wastewater treatment is basically for domestic sewage. This is considered as the secondary treatment specifically designed to remove biological contaminants from water. Usual sources of these impurities are food waste, human waste, detergent, soap, etc. Small sewage treatment plants are usually compact and self-contained which do not require any external help. They are more than sufficient to treat wastewater from households, hotels and even villages. A portable submersible pump is used to recycle the plant effluent and all tanks should have a stainless steel ladder. The sewage treatment plant processes domestic/small-scale wastewater and produces clean water which can be used directly in the environment for various purposes mostly agriculture and farming. Regular servicing of the plant is also required for best use which keeps the mechanical components in absolutely good working condition. These treatment plants are also emptied periodically. This basically allows the system to be free of sludge which naturally accumulates with time. Benefits of portable sewage treatment plant include removal of sludge and better treated water quality. Long sludge retention time results in less sludge generation.
