Alert! Stagnant Sewage Can Damage your ACs

Stagnant Sewage Can Damage AC 1

CHENNAI: If you are planning to move into a house near a sewage stagnant water body or a sewage pumping station, be ready to repair your air-conditioner frequently as experts say that vapours from the sewage corrodes the copper components. This is harmful for electrical or electronic appliances, but AC is affected most because it has more copper.

Residents around the sewage pumping stations in Perambur and Korattur told TOI that they also have been replacing their ACs frequently. “We are shelling out a lot of money,”

Retired professor of chemical engineering from IIT  Madras T Swaminathan said “Stagnant sewage emanates hydrogen sulphide gas, which is responsible for its rotten egg smell. It could become sulphurous or sulphuric acid, which reacts with the copper parts of the AC, corroding it and causing gas leaks”.
