Located in the suburbs of Chennai, the Madambakkam Lake is seen deteriorating due to unchecked growth of hyacinths and illegal dumping of sewage. The lake is a primary source of water for residents in both Madambakkam and Chitlapakkam, but it has gotten the residents worried.
A Chitlapakkam resident said, “The water quality has turned from bad to worse. We are scared to use the water after seeing the condition of the lake.” A Madambakkam resident said that though the southern suburb has several water bodies, we cannot rely on them.
An executive engineer from the water resource department has said that a plan is being discussed with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority regarding the restoration of the Madambakkam Lake.
